RADISYS REPORTS FIRST QUARTER 2012 RESULTS

Thu, 2012/05/17 - 22:52

HILLSBORO, OR — April 24, 2012— Radisys Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), a leading provider of infrastructure solutions for telecom, aerospace, defense and public safety applications, announced revenues for the first quarter of $75.5 million and non-GAAP revenue of $75.7 million. First quarter GAAP net loss was $4.8 million or $0.18 per share and non-GAAP net income was $1.5 million or $0.05 per diluted share. First quarter non-GAAP results exclude the impact of purchase accounting adjustments, amortization of acquired intangible assets, stock-based compensation and restructuring and acquisition-related charges. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP results is located in the tables below.

Commenting on the first quarter results, Mike Dagenais, Radisys’ Chief Executive Officer stated, “Our first quarter performance came in as expected. Solid shipments in both our and Software & Solutions product groups, which combined grew 60% year on year, enabled non-GAAP gross margins of nearly 34%. We also were able to drive lower costs relative to our plan due to the ongoing focus on improving efficiencies throughout the organization. We expect these efforts to result in additional 2012 expense synergies.”

Mr. Dagenais went on to say, “We had another good design win quarter with customers continuing to validate our strategy by awarding us wins that combine our hardware and software technology and leverage our professional services in unique ways. High margin wins for a balancer, femto gateway, and mobile ‘Push-to-Talk’ application aimed at the defense market are good examples from this last quarter that demonstrate our capability of bringing unique solutions to our customers. In addition, we had numerous design wins within our COMe product lines for use in military and communication applications.”

First Quarter Financial Highlights

 GAAP revenue was $75.5 million and non-GAAP revenue was $75.7 million. ATCA and Software & Solutions Revenues were $49.7 million, up 60% Year over Year and growing to 66% of Total Revenue.

 GAAP gross margin was 30.5%. Non-GAAP gross margin was 33.8% and represents a 5 percentage point increase from the same quarter last year, primarily resulting from improved product mix.

 Total GAAP Research and Development (R&D) and Selling, General and Administrative (SG&A) expenses were $24.5 million and non-GAAP R&D and SG&A expenses were $23.6 million, down $3.3 million from the prior quarter as result of integration synergies.

 Cash consumed from operating activities was $0.9 million and was in line with expectations. Cash and cash equivalents were $43.8 million at the end of the first quarter, down from $47.8 million at the end of the fourth quarter primarily due to acquisition related activities including severance related payouts and capital expenditures.

Financial Outlook

Second Quarter 2012 Outlook

 Revenue: Non-GAAP revenue is expected to be between $80 and $86 million representing an approximate $7 million or 10% increase from the first quarter. ATCA and Software & Solutions revenue is expected to drive the majority of the increase as end customer deployments from previous design wins begin ramping. All other revenue categories are expected to be slightly up when compared to the first quarter.

 Gross Margin: Second quarter non-GAAP gross margin rate is expected to be between 35% and 37%.

 Operating Expenses: Second quarter non-GAAP R&D and SG&A expenses are expected to increase by as much as $1 million sequentially as a result of increased R&D associated with ATCA products nearing production release.

 EPS: Second quarter non-GAAP net income is expected to be between $0.13 and $0.18 per diluted share.

Mr. Dagenais went on to say, “While we have seen some near term softening from our largest customer, our business fundamentals and prospects for long term profitable growth remain unchanged. Our customers are continuing to show they value our unique capabilities as they seek to resolve their capacity challenges. The integration of Continuous Computing is going well and yielding better than expected cost synergies that position us very well for delivering long term revenue and profit growth.”

Emerson Network Power Recognized as Number One in AdvancedTCA Systems

Thu, 2012/05/17 - 19:52

TEMPE, Ariz., US. [17 May, 2012] – A new report has recognized the []® (ATCA®) market leadership position of Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™.

The ATCA Worldwide Market Share Analysis and Market Forecast, 2011 – 2016, report from Markinetics, Inc., an independent market research consultancy, identifies Emerson Network Power as having the largest installed base of ATCA blades and ATCA systems and the largest market penetration in 2011. As one of the pioneers of ATCA technology, Emerson Network Power has been supplying integrated, application-ready platforms and market-leading blades for over 10 years. Having worked with all of the top large telecom equipment manufacturers and many smaller specialized providers of networking equipment, the company has built up an unrivalled depth and breadth of experience and expertise worldwide.

According to the Markinetics report (commissioned by Emerson Network Power), the ATCA equipment market reached an estimated size of $742.1 million in 2011, representing a year-over-year increase of approximately nine percent from 2010. By the end of 2012, the ATCA market is expected to grow further and slightly exceed $831 million. The Markinetics report states that Emerson Network Power captured 19.2 percent of the overall market and cites the company’s strategic acquisitions and investment in ATCA research and development.

Richard Dean, senior vice president, Markinetics, Inc., said: “Achieving global competitive advantage in an ever-changing, intensely competitive, and highly-regulated industry requires much more than competent products, services, and favorable pricing. The ATCA supplier, then, can be most successful when it possesses unique technical resources and market development capabilities which enable it to profitably satisfy these customer needs in ways that are difficult to emulate. Maintaining a leadership position over an extended period generally requires a sensible blend of customer intimacy, operational excellence and technology leadership. Emerson Network Power is one of only a small handful of firms capable of demonstrating a comprehensive technical and services roadmap over time and is therefore more likely to become a preferred ATCA vendor of choice and expand its installed base.”

“With over 25,000 ATCA systems and 200,000 blades deployed in carrier networks, it is clear that Emerson Network Power is the leader in ATCA,” said Brian Brown, vice president and general manager, marketing and services for the business of Emerson Network Power. “Our installed systems process over 500 Terabytes per second, which is the equivalent of over 18 million high definition movies per day!

“We have achieved the honored position of number one by making sure that our deep understanding of our customers’ needs is translated into solutions that help them gain a competitive advantage while reducing total cost of ownership and risk,” Brown continued.

Emerson Network Power was actively involved in the definition of the and continues to lead in its evolution through various committees, including working on expanding its application beyond a successful telecom base. The company has hosted interoperability workshops and public demonstrations, and written many white papers and articles to educate developers.

As one of the first companies to introduce the latest ATCA technology, Emerson Network Power has deployed many thousands of 40G-ready ATCA platforms in carrier networks. These platforms include 2-slot, 6-slot and 14-slot variants that are designed to meet the needs of telecom central office environments.

Rob Pettigrew, marketing director of Emerson Network Power’s Embedded Computing business, said: “Emerson is the only major ATCA systems vendor that designs and manufactures its own . We understand how to build systems that are capable of meeting the carrier-grade NEBS and ETSI requirements of central office deployments. And since we understand and specify our environments, we can design all our payload blades such that they can be deployed in all of our chassis with full payload configurations, and still meet the industry’s thermal and acoustic requirements. What’s more, we have the only two-slot and six-slot systems in the market with front to rear cooling and integrated AC power options, which are critical for central office deployments.

“With one of only a few generally available 40G ATCA switches, the ATCA-F140, and a growing portfolio of 40G payload blades, Emerson is poised for continued leadership as ATCA technology is adopted as a common platform for a wider range of applications,” Pettigrew continued.

TI introduces industry’s first LED controller with constant power regulation

Thu, 2012/05/17 - 17:59

LIGHTFAIR INTERNATIONAL, LAS VEGAS (May 9, 2012) – Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NASDAQ: TXN) today introduced a new LED controller with constant power regulation. The LM3447 AC/DC LED driver includes a dimmer detect, phase decoder and adjustable hold current circuits to provide smooth and flicker-free dimming operation in off-line, isolated LED lighting applications, including A19, E26/27 and PAR30/38 bulbs, as well as can light retrofits. For more information, samples and an evaluation module, visit www.ti.com/lm3447-pr.

Traditional drivers use constant current control to accurately regulate LED forward current. This approach produces consistent light output or intensity from LEDs in the same bin. However, once current is applied to the LED, its solder point temperature rises, leading to a decrease in forward voltage and a drop in efficacy. Conversely, by using the new LM3447 with constant power regulation, the LED forward voltage droop over temperature is offset by an increase in LED current to maintain constant LED power. The result is up to 10-percent improvement in efficacy across the expected operating temperature range of the fixture. Watch a video at www.ti.com/lm3447v-pr.

The LM3447 joins TI’s portfolio of off-line LED lighting controllers that include the National LM3445, the industry’s first phase-dimmable LED driver with constant current control, and the TPS92310 primary side regulator for non-dimming applications. For more information on all of TI’s lighting products, visit www.ti.com/lighting-pr. The LM3447 will be demonstrated in TI’s booth #6935 at Lightfair International in Las Vegas, NV, from May 9 to 11.

Key features and benefits of the LM3447 LED driver

• Integrated phase dimmer decoding and dimmer detection circuitry allows for easy design and highest efficiency.

• Operates with leading edge (TRIAC) and trailing edge dimmers.

• Primary side control supports isolated lighting designs without opto-couplers.

• Constant power LED load regulation improves efficacy of LED array by compensating for LED junction temperature changes.

• Fixed frequency discontinuous conduction mode flyback topology with valley switching simplifies EMI filter design.

• Greater than 0.9 power factor correction meets all regulatory requirements.

• Thermal fold-back protects LED array from over-temperature while still providing reduced light output.

• LED open- and short-circuit protection and driver IC thermal shutdown protect lamp electronics from damage during fault conditions.

Availability, packaging and pricing

The LM3447 is available in volume now from TI and its authorized distributors. Offered in a 14-pin TSSOP package, the suggested retail price is $0.85 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Actix secures landmark 60th LTE customer

Wed, 2012/05/16 - 18:17

London, UK. May 16 2012: Actix, the world leader in analytics and optimization, announced it has secured its 60th customer for its Network Acceptance solution. As the pace of LTE rollouts increases, Actix is already supporting most of Europe, Asia and North America’s early deployments.

Actix’s LTE Network Acceptance solution helps mobile operators minimize the substantial risks involved in LTE rollout and ensure day one network quality. The solution enables them to independently verify the performance of their LTE networks prior to launch by enforcing and unambiguous KPIs; automating the network acceptance process to manage cost and complexity and deliver centralized governance, ensuring full control of network equipment providers. Full optimization capabilities also allow any issues identified during the process to be addressed at the same time.

“Actix is delighted that our leadership in mobile analytics and optimization is continuing with LTE” said Bill McHale, Actix CEO. “For such a critical investment, taking the risk out of LTE rollout by ensuring specific contractual KPIs are met by network equipment providers is vital. Actix’s network acceptance solution is handing control of the network back into the hands of the operator, and it’s testament to the capability and performance of the solution that so many worldwide operators and vendors are using it to deploy next generation networks.”

Network Acceptance is a critical process used by mobile network operators to ensure that deployed network equipment meets performance targets prior to launch. With ROI dependent on an on-time, on-quality and on-budget delivery of the network, network rollout can be a high-risk activity for operators. Poor quality network delivery can lead to operators experiencing lower service uptake, higher levels of customer dissatisfaction, increased post launch optimization costs, and a reputation for a poor network quality.

The Actix acceptance solution is available in a single-user desktop version, or as a multi-user hosted [], allowing hundreds of stakeholders within both the operator and network equipment provider access to the data.

“Our close working relationship with early stage LTE operators is providing us with valuable insight into the very real challenges involved in rolling out LTE, especially in the modern HetNet environment” said Richard Kateley, Actix CTO. “Actix supports over 200 data interfaces and this multi-vendor and multi-technology approach is helping operators make sense of an environment far more complex than the one they faced during the rollout of UMTS”.

Actix has been nominated for the ‘Best Test/Measurement LTE Product’ at the Telecoms.com LTE Awards 2012. Now in its third year, and taking place at LTE World Summit 2012 on May 23rd in the El Xalet, Montjuic, Barcelona, the awards celebrate and recognize the achievements of leadership, quality and innovation in the LTE industry.

Wed, 2012/05/16 - 16:51

Carbon Design Systems® Inc., the leading supplier of platform and solutions, today introduced the Carbon Performance Analysis Kit (CPAK) family for accelerating the analysis, optimization and verification of system-on-chip () performance.

CPAKs enable architects and engineers to begin analyzing performance and power within hours of installation, and months before tapeout, reducing overall time-to-market pressures and minimizing the risk of a complete re-design. They can be customized using from Carbon’s IP Exchange model , or Carbon Model Studio.

The CPAK family for ® Cortex™ A-Series processors contains reference hardware and software designs along with analysis and software for the Cortex-A9, Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A7 cores, and the ARM big.LITTLE™ subsystem.

It comes pre-configured with bare-metal initialization software, [] or [] OS for analyzing, optimizing and verifying performance and power. In addition, the CPAK Family is pre-configured with the [] task migration software layer between the big.LITTLE processing cluster, which includes ARM Cortex-A15 MPCore and Cortex-A7 MPCore processors, and the OS.

“Designers often attempt to use 85-90% cycle-accurate solutions that they claim are good enough for system analysis,” comments Joe Tatham, Carbon’s vice president of engineering. “What typically happens, though, is that model is only 50-60% accurate for certain areas. Designers are making multi-million dollar decisions based upon data that’s about as accurate as the flip of a coin. Carbon is the only vendor that offers 100% cycle-accurate models, where design teams can guarantee performance results will match the final silicon, minimizing the risk of a re-design.”

iC-LO: optical triangulation position sensor with ambient light suppression for up to 13.9 kHz switching frequencies

Wed, 2012/05/16 - 09:01

The new iC-LO device is a triangulation position sensor specifically designed as a system on chip for the assembly of diffuse reflective photoelectric sensors with switching outputs. Thanks to the high integration of the functions, which includes the photodiodes, LED driver, interface, signal conditioning circuitry, and signal filter unit, the overall system is extremely small. Besides the iC-LO, all that is needed to create a triangulation measurement setup are a transmitting LED and a low-cost microcontroller.

The specially designed optical array is divided into one near diode, 127 middle diodes, and one far diode. Two AC amplifiers are integrated together with the optical array to enable high interference and ambient light suppression and a dynamic range of up to 100 dB. Using a filter glass, an ambient light suppression of up to 100 kLux can be obtained.

The number of averaged measurements can be set to digitally filter the signals with measurement rates of up to 13.9 kHz. The integrated lowside LED driver generates transmitting pulse currents of up to 1.2 A. An external laser diode driver can also be activated for laser triangulation. The pulse duration of the illumination signal can be set through the SPI interface.

Data is output through two antivalent switching outputs and an additional output for the weak received light alarm. Alternatively, the SPI interface implemented for the configuration of the device can be used to output sensor results and states to a field bus interface through a microcontroller.
